I have lived for nineteen years on the Rame Peninsula in South East Cornwall. A special quality of light reflects off the sea here, and the rapidly changing mists, skies and seasonal colour-moods feed into my work.
I attempt to suffuse each painting with light.

Always at the back of my mind is the near-death experience I had during the birth of my daughter: those memories are at the root of my work. Regular meditation helps my inner vision.

I try to create a timeless zone where you may lose yourself for a while.

My working process uses the random, within a tightly disciplined framework.
Each painting grows gradually through an accumulation of oil glazes, which conceal and reveal form.

In between this layering, the long drying time provides a crucial lapse in painting activity:  this frees my mind to contemplate the further development of the image. I compare my layering method to that of ancient icon-painters, who meditated during the drying of each layer of paint, thus weaving their prayers almost literally into the icon.

Thin veils of translucent colour connect and yet are separate.  For me they are planes in a multi-dimensional universe, or the hazy strata of memory, through which moments of transcendent consciousness gleam.
